Ham Radio Station Report
Location: Odenton, Maryland (operating from our daughter’s backyard)
Operating Mode: FT8 & Phone
Radio Equipment: Xiegu G90
Antenna: 20-meter dipole
Transmitter Power: 10 watts RF

My portable ham radio station in Odenton, Maryland, setup in our daughter’s backyard, is a remarkable example of how a minimal yet intelligently configured setup can yield impressive results. By employing the Xiegu G90 radio, 20-meter dipole antenna cut to resonance, and leveraging 10 watts of RF power, you can achieved reliable FT8 communications, including an international contact with a station in France. This achievement underscores the potential of well-planned QRP operations and the enduring appeal of digital modes in amateur radio. As I continue to refine my station and operating practices, I hope my setup serves as an inspiring model for fellow amateur radio enthusiasts looking to maximize performance even under power-constrained conditions.

The 20-meter dipole was configured in an inverted-V formation, utilizing my 27’ fiberglass poles to achieve the desired elevation which was around 15-16 foot of elevation above ground. The Xiegu G90, was powered by a 3 amp hour 12V LiFePO4 battery, ensuring a lightweight and efficient setup suitable for quick deployments.
